Peter Pan
The rescue got a message about a terrified and abused horse that was covered in whip marks and scars from prolonged abuse. This horse had been purchased in a group with other horses at an auction and was sold to a slaughter pen. This gelding was so terrified that he refused to eat and just stood in the corner of the pen shaking. The rescue quickly arrived and brought him, along with others, back to the rescue to assess the damage. He was named Peter Pan, and it was determined that his wounds and scars were from extensive abuse, neglect, and beatings. Petey had PTSD and was traumatized from his past. We healed his physical wounds, but his emotional and mental wounds are still in recovery. We have found that time, patience, and a herd group helps with trauma. Petey now feels comfortable enough to say hello to rescue members and ask them for treats. We are so proud of him and how far he has come!

Healing & Recovery
Petey is now a beautiful and healthy Saddlebred gelding that has his own voice about his life. He lives free on the rescue's acreage with his own little herd of abused and traumatized horses. Petey and his band of survivors happily graze knowing they will never be abused by humans again.
Peter Pan
Old Scars
Petey started to regain his spirit. He was turned out on 80 acres to live the life he wanted and was only asked to come in for farrier and routine care. He began to thrive. His physical scars slowly became less noticeable.
Peter Pan
Rehabilitation
Everyone at the rescue came together to heal Petey. From medicated baths and antibiotics to healing ointments and parasite prevention, Petey began to get better. His physical wounds were healing, but his mental and emotional issues took center stage. Petey was upset with humans and shied away from people as much as possible.

Arrival to the Rescue
Petey came to the rescue with extensive scarring all over his body. Some injuries were fresher and infected. He was severely thin. He was terrified of humans but quickly befriended other horses at the rescue. He tended to make friends with other horses that had been severely abused by humans.
